In the first game of the City Play-By-Play Classic, Archbishop Wood (PA) defeated Abington Heights (PA) 71-46, led by senior guard Collin Gillespie and junior wing Tyree Pickron.
The duo were in attack mode all night combining for 41 of the Vikings 73 points. Gillespie, a 6’1 senior with a few division 1 offers, was relentless penetrating the lane all night, where he finished on strong layups or found teammates for buckets. During one fastbreak play, Gillespie threw down a strong one-hand dunk with a defender trailing him closely while being fouled, causing a roar in the crowd.
The 6’3 Pickron, another division 1 recruit, also came out strong on the night, hitting shots all over the court and using his athleticism to grab rebounds. During a fourth quarter stretch, Pickron scored seven straights baskets, resulting in a huge lead change .
Abington never found their groove in the game after sophomore big man Eric Dixon was held to just one field-goal in the 1st half. The 6’6 physical specimen began to bring more intensity in the second half, scoring 11 of his 14 points.
The Ghost also received some production from junior combo guard, Robbie Heath, in the second half where he hit some big time perimeter shots. Heath finish with 11 points, 3 assist and 3 steals in the loss.
Archbishop Wood will play Scranton Prep this Saturday at the Vikings gymnasium.
